Megan and Sam’s Student Story:

Offer Holders’ Residential Experience

For Megan and Sam, the University of Glasgow Dumfries Offer Holders’ Residential was a chance to experience campus life first-hand, meet other students, and get a real feel for what studying and living in Dumfries would be like before starting university.

Megan is currently a second-year Primary Education student at the University of Glasgow, Dumfries. She attended the Residential in 2024 while still considering her options and describes it as an experience that helped her feel confident and excited about taking the next step.

“I had an amazing experience while I was on it. It was such a good insight into what life in Dumfries would be like and what I should expect from classes.”

During the residential, Megan not only explored the campus and academic environment, but also began building friendships that would shape her student experience long before she officially arrived. Meeting other offer holders helped ease the transition to university life and removed many of the anxieties that often come with moving somewhere new.

“I met other potential students on the residential and we all ended up becoming really good friends. I actually moved into a flat with a girl I met on the residential, who is now one of my best friends. When I moved into student halls, I already knew people, and that made me much less nervous about coming to Dumfries.”

For Megan, the welcoming atmosphere and the opportunity to ask questions directly to staff and current students played a key role in her decision-making. By the end of the residential, she felt confident that Dumfries was the right place for her.

“The residential was what confirmed that this University was the right decision for me. Everyone was so kind and welcoming and answered every question I had. I actually formally accepted my offer on UCAS during the residential, and I can definitely say it was 100% the best decision I made.”

Sam, who also attended the residential, shares a similar experience. Now settled in Dumfries, he reflects on how the residential helped him ‘test the waters’ before committing to the campus and build friendships that have lasted well beyond the event itself.

“The residential was a really good opportunity for me to experience student life and test it out when I was considering this campus. It gave me a good look at what life would be like in Dumfries.”

Like Megan, Sam found that the connections made during the residential continued into student life, helping him feel at home more quickly and comfortably.

“Life in Dumfries for me has been really good and has given me some great friends - some of whom I actually met on the residential! It’s been a great start to university life.”

For both Megan and Sam, the Offer Holders’ Residential was a great way to meet people, ask questions, and see what life at the Dumfries Campus is really like - helping them start university feeling confident, connected, and excited for what was ahead.
