We are delighted to welcome Lizzie Robertson over the next few months working with on the Re-wilding network project, funded by RSE, led by Prof Nicki Whitehouse. Lizzie introduces herself here:

“I am a digital archaeologist and have been completing a PhD in the Archaeology department here at Glasgow, titled “We all listen: creating and performing immersive sound art as archaeological practice in Scottish Highland Landscapes”. My research specialism is in the use of creative approaches to Archaeological practice, with my current research in the use of experimental sound-based media in archaeological landscapes. As part of this, I’ve been creating composition and installation work around the landscapes of Glencoe and Rannoch Moor. These explore the entangled archaeological and ecological stories woven through the townships, shielings, crofts, and sheep farms in this landscape through experimental field recording practices. Part of this work has also involved co-directing our department’s Glencoe fieldschool, as part of the digital and engagement team.

I have recently joined the “Into the Wild: rewilding and the historic environment” team (PI: Prof Nicki Whitehouse) as a research assistant to the project. Part of my role is to establish a website that will host our questionnaire on approaches to rewilding across the archaeology and environment sectors, which will go live in May. Building up this online presence will be a way of reaching out to landowners, environmental land managers, archaeologist and heritage specialists in order to understand what changes could be implemented at policy level in the future to ensure the protection of archaeological sites in areas that may be under consideration for environmental conservation efforts. Through my role I will also be creating materials from our previous workshop, which will go on to inform some of our future events and can be used as outputs for the project. Having been involved previously in peatland research, including workshops as part of the Discipline-Hopping Peatlands & Wetlands group, I’m looking forward to continuing to work in this area and collaborate with team members and stakeholders on delivering this project”
