Protecting Iraq’s Cultural Heritage

Congratulations to Dr Mónica Palmero Fernández who has been elected as Secretary of the NGO RASHID International.
Dr Mónica Palmero Fernández (Lecturer) has been elected as Secretary of the NGO RASHID International (Research, Assessment and Safeguarding of the Heritage of Iraq in Danger). Dr Palmero Fernández has worked with the NGO since 2018.
RASHID International is a worldwide network of archaeologists, cultural heritage experts and like-minded professionals dedicated to safeguarding the cultural heritage of Iraq. It was founded in 2014 as a response to the widespread destruction of cultural heritage perpetrated by Daesh during its occupation of the parts of the country. Since then, RASHID International has produced high-level reports for the UN’s Special Rapporteur in the Field of Cultural Rights, contributed to projects designed to protect Iraq’s heritage through documenting the destruction of Yazidi heritage and using cutting edge technology that allows invisible marking of artefacts to protect them against looting in the future. Since 2019, RASHID International holds special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC status).
In 2019, Dr Palmero Fernández attended the high-level UN Human Rights Council’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Pre-sessions, a series of events designed to enhance civil society participating in the UPR process, during which RASHID International presented a series of recommendations on how to improve cultural heritage protection through a human rights approach.
