Research interests

I have an interest in vascular physiology that developed during studies completed as part of my PhD thesis (Research in Veterinary Science 2002; 73(3): 215-21). I am currently investigating the effect of a bovine polymerised haemoglobin solution (Oxyglobin«) on vascular function. Haemoglobin-based oxygen carrying solutions are believed to mediate vasoconstriction by inhibiting nitric oxide. Preliminary studies conducted on isolated rings of rat aorta support this theory (Journal of Veterinary Pharmacology & Therapeutics doi: 10.1111/j.1365-2885.2007.00913.x). We are currently in the middle of a project to determine if this is also the case in isolated canine arteries obtained from euthanased pet dogs (work funded by a BSAVA Petsavers Clinical Research Project award). I also have an interest in analgesia and have contributed to a study to develop an analgesic intervention score for the Glasgow Composite Measure Pain Scale (Animal Welfare 2007; 16(S): 97-104).
