Focusing on Form in GME
Published: 24 November 2025
Thursday 27th November, 4-5pm (Online)

Our third live session in the Gaelic Education Hub of the Centre for Teaching Excellence will be an opportunity to hear from Dr Sìleas L. MacLeod (linguist, lecturer in language and other subjects, Sabhal Mòr Ostaig) who will discuss opportunities for development within Gaelic Medium Education (GME), particularly in relation to children’s language skills, although positions and opinions on GME will also be briefly touched upon. This data was collected and analysed from a sociolinguistic perspective, with the aim of identifying opportunities for development in terms of immersive learning and supporting teachers in implementing this on a day-to-day basis, among children at primary and secondary school levels. As part of this, we will look at e.g. the most common errors observed among GME children (data from interviews in Gaelic with the pupils themselves), and reflecting on various recommendations from immersion education research to keep children up to date with their language skills and, rather than worrying that they will lose confidence as a result, to successfully encourage them in that process.
