The SOLSPACE team has won the Best Poster Award at the IEEE PES GTD Conference & Exposition Asia 2025, held in Bangkok, Thailand from 26 to 29 November 2025.
Dr. Khaldon Alareqi, a Research Associate leading the Energy Systems and Economic Modelling theme within the SOLSPACE project, presented the award-winning poster titled:
“SOLSPACE: Orbiting Solar Reflectors Delivering Global Renewable Power from Space.”
The poster showcased pioneering research from the European Research Council-funded SOLSPACE project, led by Professor Colin McInnes. The project explores the concept of orbiting solar reflectors designed to redirect sunlight to terrestrial solar farms during dawn and dusk. This innovative approach aims to address critical gaps in solar energy production, enhance solar farm output, reduce CO₂ emissions, and contribute to global efforts to achieve net-zero emission goals.
The award-winning poster highlighted key areas of SOLSPACE project research:
- Energy Integration & Cost Analysis – Dr. Khaldon Alareqi
- Constellation Design – Dr. Onur Çelik (currently at TU Delft)
- Structural Design & Manufacturing – Dr. Litesh Sulbhewar
- Attitude Control – Dr. Iain Moore
- Laboratory Testing of the Structures – Dr. Vaibhav Anuse
- End-of-Life Considerations – Dr. Robert Gordon
This achievement not only celebrates the hard work of the SOLSPACE team but also reinforces the University of Glasgow’s commitment to pioneering sustainable energy solutions. By demonstrating the potential of space-based solar power, SOLSPACE is helping to shape the future of global energy systems and inspire new collaborations that aim to accelerate the transition to net-zero.
Congratulations to Dr. Khaldon Alareqi and the entire SOLSPACE team for this outstanding achievement!
