The Intelligent and Autonomous Systems research cluster studies and develops autonomous vehicles, including Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs), biologically inspired vehicles, and rovers. Our expertise spans the full spectrum of autonomous systems research, from simulation and control system design to hardware implementation and real-world vehicle trials.
Our research also delves into the coordinated guidance and control of multi-vehicle and multi-platform systems. With the global rise of autonomous micro-UAVs, these technologies are increasingly recognised as vital for future aerospace applications. Their potential spans from military and homeland security, such as tactical surveillance and disaster response, to commercial sectors like surveying, power line inspection, and crop monitoring.
We conduct cutting-edge research funded by both research councils and industry in the areas of aerospace surveillance, survivability, and simulation. Key ongoing projects focus on nonlinear guidance and flight control, multi-agent multi-fidelity simulation, and micro-UAV vehicle design.
Supporting this research are state-of-the-art facilities, including a dedicated micro-UAV lab with an indoor flying area, an autonomous underwater vehicle development lab, and a sight-line control lab, enabling comprehensive experimentation and innovation in autonomous systems.

Automation and health monitoring
We focus on developing multi-variable automation systems and effective health monitoring techniques to improve efficiency, reduce human error, and ensure the safe operation of automated processes in modern industries.
Biometric autonomous vehicles
We explore biomimetic vehicle design, focusing on the development and simulation of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) inspired by natural propulsion mechanisms, including projects like RoboSalmon, SHARC, and ornithopters.

Our research into Micro-Unmanned Aerial Systems (μ-UAS) explores the design and development of small, high-performance drones for military reconnaissance, surveying, and cargo transportation, focusing on improving safety, reliability, and public acceptance, supported by the MAVERIC simulation engine and the MAST Laboratory.
Planetary exploration
We conduct research into the guidance, control, and fault-tolerant systems of planetary rovers, using simulation and practical experiments to improve navigation, fault detection, and recovery, with applications extending to aircraft, submersibles, and other robotic systems.
