Gambling and crime projects

GRG members have conducted research examining gambling in the criminal justice system. The Tracking Vulnerability and Resilience project (2009-2012), funded by the ESRC, was a collaborative effort between Lancaster University and the University of Glasgow, with contributions from Professor Gerda Reith. It explored how patterns of risk, vulnerability, and resilience in gambling intersect with criminal justice involvement across offender populations in England and Scotland. By tracing “gambling careers” among incarcerated individuals and those released, the project examined links between problem gambling, mental health, substance use, and socio-economic deprivation. The aim was to identify who is most at risk, how resilience emerges, and what interventions could reduce vulnerability-notably advancing sociological understanding and practical strategies for prevention within and beyond the justice system.
