Phase 1 Research Report

Camau i'r Dyfodol - Curriculum for Wales: Evolving understandings of progression in learning

This publication reports on the research activities for Phase 1 which ran from 1st March 2022 to the 31st August 2022.  Phase 1 of the project aimed to understand where education professionals are in the change process and what professional contexts for change might support co-construction activity within and beyond the project. Phase 1 also aimed to develop the project’s conceptual and theoretical grounding in relation to i) co-construction and ii) the relationships between curriculum, assessment, pedagogy, and progression.  Finally, it aimed to work with participants to build trust in the process of co-construction as a way of working within the Camau i’r Dyfodol project going forward to the next phases.

Phase 2 Research Report

Camau i'r Dyfodol: Building practical understandings of Curriculum for Wales

This publication reports on the research activities for Phase 2 which ran from 1st September 2022 to the 31st August 2023.  It is intended for the Welsh Government and educational professionals involved in translating the new curriculum from policy into practice, but may also be of interest to the research and policy communities more widely.  Phase 2 established a Co-Construction Group (CCG) which involved education professionals from each level of the system in Wales together with members of the Camau i’r Dyfodol project team. The co-construction group met through a series of in-person and online meetings to develop knowledge and understanding of learning progression and curriculum. This activity was supported by four National Network Conversations and on-going research summaries and inputs that were prepared in response to the developing thinking of the group.

Phase 3 Research Report

Working with a process approach to Curriculum for Wales: ‘I can now be the teacher I always wanted to be.’

This report focuses on the research activities for Phase 3 which were ongoing throughout 2024. Phase 3 continues the main aim of the project to develop coherent and shared understandings of curriculum, assessment and pedagogy across the education system in relation to Curriculum for Wales (CfW). This phase involved three strands. Strand A was designed to support coherent practical understandings of curriculum design through practical approaches to curriculum making in classrooms.  Strand B provided a coconstructive space for sense-making and collaborative learning with members of Welsh Government and Education Support Partners. Strand C involved interviews with Initial Teacher Education professionals in Wales to understand how they are supporting understanding of CfW with student teachers.  The report forgrounds the voice of teachers and their work with learners in classrooms in different parts of Wales, and shares findings about working with Curriculum for Wales in practice as a purpose-led, process-oriented curriculum.
