Short Description
With appropriate supervision, students pursue an independent research project. The project might take the form of either a dissertation, Applied Research Project or a Practice-as-Research project.

Assessment
The standard assessments for this course are:
■ Dissertation (15000 words) - 100%
■ OR Applied Research Project (15000-word equivalent) - 100%
■ OR Practice-as-Research Project (15000-word equivalent) - 100%
If required, for instance where a disability prevents a student from undertaking a specific method of assessment, the following alternatives are available:
■ There is no alternative to the assessments, but flexible deadlines can be offered as reasonable adjustments (students should follow the usual process for extensions)

Course Aims
The course aims to:
■ develop and deepen the student's personal research interest in their chosen subject area;
■ promote an engagement with other scholarly, critical, theoretical or applied arguments relevant to that area;
■ encourage the application of acquired research skills to a supervised independent project.
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
By the end of the course students will be able to:
■ Design and execute a coherent and focused independent research project in the form of a dissertation OR a practice-based independent research project with either a framing statement or critical reflection.
■ Recognise, describe and critique to an advanced level, in writing and/or through creative practice, the developments in drama, theatre or performance that constitute the primary focus of research.
■ Identify, interpret, apply and critique to an advanced level key concepts, theories and debates appropriate to the research project.
■ Design and implement their research following the principles and procedures regarding research integrity and research ethics.
