Short Description
This course provides an analysis of Globalisation and its impact on public health by examining the major health related themes within the globalisation debate. Several major global health challenges and their overall impact on the Global Burden of Disease will be studied.
Timetable
This 10 week online course comprises 10 weekly lectures, each taking the form of two or three short lectures totalling around 90 minutes duration, and nine related weekly exercises. Exercises will each require around four notional hours of student effort and each week an academic staff member will convene an online tutorial related to these.

Assessment
A 2,500 word essay on a particular globalisation issue will comprise 80% of the assessment and a portfolio of 1,000 words - the portfolio will be a reflective blog based on personal learning arising from weekly exercises where current policy, practice, and research is analysed - will comprise 20% of the assessment.

Course Aims
The overall aim of the course is to provide an introduction to global health as a subject area. It aims to provide a model for analysing and evaluating the different areas of globalisation including the political, social, economic and environmental domains.
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
By the end of this course students will be able to:
Define the terms globalisation, global change and global public health and critically appraise the key debates surrounding these concepts.
Critically analyse the concept of globalisation in relation to the wider determinants of health.
Assess the ways in which globalisation contributes to emerging health trends such as Mortality, Morbidity, DALY's and Life Expectancy.
Critically appraise the role of the World Health Organization (WHO) and evaluate the policy development and efficiency of WHO in relation to globalisation.
Compare selected examples of health systems and critically examine the health systems development in several low and middle income countries.
Critically analyse the key factors and organisations driving economic globalisation and the global economy.
Evaluate the role of world trade on global public health and appraise the dynamics of world trade in relation to community empowerment and justice.
Critically evaluate the role of the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, World Trade Organization and multi-national commercial organizations on global health policy and the influence of these organizations on health in developing countries.
Critically examine the global public health challenge of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria and evaluate methods employed to address these.
Examine the impact of displacement on individuals and public health systems and evaluate policies developed to address the health needs of refugees and asylum seekers.
Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits
Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
