Short Description

The principles, methods and theoretical approaches to Health Promotion / Improvement will be presented and studied in this course. The planning and evaluation of health promotion programmes at local, regional and national levels will serve as a particular focus.

Timetable

This course comprises a weekly lecture throughout semester two and a weekly seminar.

Assessment

A 3,000 word essay accounts for 80% of the summative assessment and the presentation of a poster on a particular health promotion topic accounts for 20% of the summative assessment.

Course Aims

To introduce students to the theoretical approaches and practice of health promotion, including the planning and evaluation of health promotion programmes at local, regional and national levels.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

On completion of this course, students will be able to:

Compare and contrast the principles of health promotion, health education and health protection.


Critically discuss the philosophy of health promotion including its principle methods, theoretical models and ethical concepts.


Evaluate the factors which influence population health and health promotion policy development.


Critically
appraise a number of behaviour change models and relate them to public health practice.

Assess the evidence relating to several
population health strategies as detailed in case studies.

Critically appraise the evidence base and value system underpinning social marketing and appraise the principles of social marketing in one area of public health practice.


Analyse and evaluate the development of health promoting schools, health promoting workplaces and health promoting neighbourhoods.


Critically compare the application of two well established health promotion planning models.


Assess the key principles of effective evaluation and critically examine an evaluation of health promotion practice with regard to these.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
