Assessment

Students will be offered a choice of one of two options:

(1) Essay of 4,5,000 - 5,000 words (1005) , OR,

(2) Two reviews of 2,500 words each (2 x 50%)

Essays and reviews would have the same deadline (and both reviews would be due at the same time), at the end of the course

Course Aims

The Course aims to:

(1) Provide a grounding and understanding of how media and popular culture represent and engage with crime and criminal justice issues including influencing policy; and, (2) Enable students to participate knowledgeably and critically in debates about crime and popular culture.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

(1) Demonstrate an understanding of the key theories about media, crime and popular culture in contemporary society; (2) Distinguish and evaluate the different modes and genres of media which participate in representation and circulation of crime and criminal justice messages; and, (3) Use these achievements to assess the role of the arts in penal reform.
