This course will help students to develop skills to promote patient-centred, realistic medicine for patients with life limiting conditions. It will allow students to reflect on leadership, team performance, education and the development of quality within their setting.
This course consists of lectures, tutorials and forum discussion in semester 2.
1. Quality improvement project (1500 words approx) - 50%
1. Oral personal development plan - 20%
1. Service review presentation - 30%
This course aims to define factors determining team performance, identify strategies to improve performance and to allow students to reflect on challenges in their work. The course will explore tensions and challenges in working across multiple stakeholders. Additionally the course will explore effective team working and key leadership skills. The course will explore strategies to enhance teaching skills and apply these to a range of settings. The course aims to analyse policy and guideline development. Likewise, themes of quality improvement and governance will be studied in the context of disparate work settings.
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
By the end of this course students will be able to:
■ Critically reflect on their own leadership qualities and how these may impact liaison work and within teams
■ Develop means of critically reflecting on communication and inter-personal dynamics within teams to engage positively and facilitate effective communication
■ Critically appraise and explore the interface with public sector and third sector employers to provide high quality care
■ Critically appraise and enhance skills to support personal effectiveness and the effectiveness of teams
■ Critically evaluate and apply pedagogical principles to provide high quality education to a wide range of audiences
■ Critically evaluate the role of quality improvement in patient care and create a quality improvement project
Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits
Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
