Short Description

This course will help students to develop skills to promote patient-centred, realistic medicine for patients with life limiting conditions. It will allow students to reflect on leadership, team performance, education and the development of quality within their setting.

1. Quality Improvement Project (2,000 words) - 60% (ILO 3, 4 & 5)

2. Presentation - 40% (ILO 1, 4)

Course Aims

This course aims to define factors determining team performance, identify strategies to improve performance and to allow students to reflect on challenges in their work. It will explore tensions and challenges in working across multiple stakeholders as well as exploring effective team working and key leadership skills. It will also explore strategies to  enhance teaching skills and apply these to a range of settings. The course aims to analyse policy and guideline development. Likewise, themes of quality improvement and governance will be studied in the context of disparate work settings.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

1. Judge their own leadership qualities and how these may impact liaison work and within teams

2. Critically appraise and explore the interface with public sector and third sector employers to provide high quality care

3. Critically appraise and enhance skills to support personal effectiveness and the effectiveness of teams 

4. Critically evaluate and apply pedagogical principles to provide high quality education to a wide range of audiences  

5. Create a quality improvement project and develop approach to critique quality improvement projects

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
