SNP Assay Design and Validation MED5331

  • Academic Session: 2023-24
  • School: School of Medicine Dentistry and Nursing
  • Credits: 10
  • Level: Level 5 (SCQF level 11)
  • Typically Offered: Semester 2
  • Available to Visiting Students: Yes

Short Description

Students will work independently to develop and validate a polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based assay for a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP).

Subsequent to the initial tutorials all work is conducted by students in their own time.

Excluded Courses

Protocol design examination (10 %)

Report describing assay design (80 %)

Laboratory record book (10 %)

Main Assessment In: April/May

Course Aims

This course aims to provide students with an opportunity to develop their skills in independent laboratory work, experimental design and time management.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ use appropriate databases and internet-based resources to design, and then validate in the laboratory, a PCR-based assay for a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP);

■ plan and execute effective laboratory protocols;

■ with critical reference to the relevant literature, generate a concise laboratory report.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75 % by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
