Short Description

Sports and Exercise Nutrition specialization covers the recent research evidence on the role of nutrition in the performance and health of athletes. The teaching sessions, including lectures, seminars, and journal clubs, will be based on critical review and discussion of the original research papers and systematic reviews in the field of sports and exercise nutrition. Students will have practical sessions on the evaluation of nutritional strategies for energy substrate selection and exercise performance. Students will also critically evaluate the evidence for the use of sports supplements promoted on websites, magazines, and marketing materials.

A 90 min exam (ILOs: 1-6)

 

An individual piece of coursework/ set exercise (approx. 2500 words) (ILOs: 2, 6-7).

Course Aims

To provide students with an understanding of the role and importance of nutrition in exercise and physical performance.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

On completion of this specialisation module students will be able to:·

1. Identify and critically discuss the main nutritional problems in athletes and individuals who exercise regularly for health and fitness.

2. Discuss critically the current scientific data related to the energy needs of athletes, assessment of body composition and strategies for body mass change.

3. Discuss critically the current scientific data related to the effects of macronutrients and fluid on exercise performance and health.

4. Discuss critically the current scientific data related to the effects of supplementary vitamins or minerals and nutritional ergogenic aids on exercise performance and health.

5. Discuss and explain mechanisms by which performance and recovery from exercise are enhanced by optimal nutrition.

6. Select and critique nutritional approaches for the enhancement of performance in endurance, strength, and sprint training and design diets based on current available sports nutrition recommendations.

7. Communicate and present research evidence and ideas clearly in a style appropriate to a variety of different audiences using different media and in the format of scientific reports

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
