Short Description

This multidisciplinary course introduces health and social care professionals to practice of spiritual and religious care with reference to their own health or social care setting. It explores the areas of personal belief and practice around life, health dying and death,.

Co-requisite for specialism in Health and Social Care Chaplaincy.

Assessment

Students will submit a 2,500 word critical reflection of spiritual and religious care practice in healthcare. The assessment will be supported with evidence from literature and including reference to the on-line activities within the course. Course Aims

* To provide a thorough grounding of the principles and standards of professional practice in spiritual and religious care
* To develop the students' awareness of their professional practice and discern their individual skills and limitations in providing spiritual and religious care as part of the healthcare team.
* To facilitate students to analyse and implement good practice, from literature, research and audit.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of the course the students will be able to:
* Critically analyse the practitioner's personal own beliefs and values and the impact on professional practice of caring for others with differing beliefs and value systems.
* Critically appraise the concept of 'safe practice' in spiritual and religious care.
* Discuss and evaluate contemporary literature, research, professional standards and audit data and implement good practice.
* Develop strategies and resources to facilitate the education of healthcare professionals within healthcare institutions
* Critically appraise healthcare team dynamics and evaluate the practitioner's role within teams as a resource and in providing support.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
