Food of animal origin, and student tours.

Students have been taking their third first semester course: Food of Animal Origin. The course includes sessions on animal genetics and breeding, animal welfare, health and nutrition, and introduced aspects of food production.

The students visited the University Farm to learn about animal nutrition and also visited Moredun Research Institute, which carries out world class research into livestock health and disease prevention.


The students had a tour of the research facilities and farm and were able to attend a symposium on dairy farming, which included presentations on dairy production and food security.

Students have been finalizing their choices of optional courses to be taken in the second semester. This year there are 13 courses to choose from, those that are integral to the MSc Food Security programme and additional options that focus on socio-economic aspects and crop biotechnology.


Students select courses based on their interests and also try to spread out their workload through the second semester. Among the most popular courses are Insects in Food Security, Global Animal Production and Plant Genetic Engineering, but a range of courses were selected, including Policies for Sustainability and Development, taught by the Business School.
