The Dissertation in English Language & Linguistics allows the student to undertake a substantial piece of research, building on the coursework undertaken in semesters 1 and 2.
1 hour consultation about topic choice; 4 x 1 hour supervision sessions; 1 hour ethics consultation if required
Requirements of Entry
Standard entry to Masters at College level
A candidate will be permitted to progress to preparation of the dissertation, or other substantial independent work required by the degree, only if he or she has obtained an average aggregation score of 12 (equivalent to C3) or above in the taught courses with at least 75% of the credits at Grade D3 or better and all credits at Grade F or above.
The dissertation should be of around 15,000 words in length.
This course aims to:
-- develop and sustain an argument in an area of the student's personal research interest within the broad field of English Language & Linguistics.
-- promote an engagement with other scholarly, critical or theoretical arguments relevant to that area
-- encourage the application of acquired research skills to a supervised project
-- lay the foundations for potential further research at PhD level
Intended Learning Outcomes of Course
On completion of the dissertation students should be able to:
-- show mastery of relevant primary and secondary materials in their chosen subject area
-- show substantial and detailed first-hand knowledge of their chosen subject area
-- define, plan and execute a sustained, focused and coherent research project relating to a specified research question
-- use all appropriate bibliographic and information tools
-- work independently
-- execute a substantial piece of written work in clear and appropriate academic English
-- show mastery of all relevant presentational conventions
Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits
Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
