The course aims to provide the postgraduate student with academic knowledge and clinical skills to enable them to develop their skills in diagnosing endodontic problems and to provide appropriate treatment to endodontic patients. During the course, students will learn the impact of endodontic disease within populations and how teeth lost due to endodontic failure can be replaced.

Teaching will consist of endodontic pre-clinical/ clinical treatment sessions, research/ audit sessions, didactic teaching seminars, critical reading seminars, endodontic diagnostic clinic. Plus one session assisting with undergraduate teaching in clinic per week.

To provide the postgraduate with academic knowledge and clinical skills to enable them to:

■ establish endodontic treatment needs within populations

■ assess the needs, treatment options, and organise appropriate immediate and subsequent treatment for patients with failed endodontic treatment resulting in tooth loss

By the end of this course students will be able to critically analyse and:

■ demonstrate clinical competence in the necessity for 'whole patient care' in patients with endodontic problems

■ discuss the aetiology, epidemiology and treatment options of root resorption

■ identify the common problems associated with the loss of teeth, their management regimes, and their associated dental problems

■ explain the importance of good (dental) teamwork in the provision of care for patients with endodontic diseases and subsequent loss of teeth

■ demonstrate an understanding of the biological and clinical challenges of endodontic retreatment

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
