Short Description

This course aims to introduce students to theories and approaches related to the social, emotional, and educational development of young people. It also aims to critically examine the impact of relevant policies that guide and underpin work with young people in formal and informal contexts.

Assessment

30% Weighting

Students will work in groups to prepare a video presentation in which they identify and critically analyse an artefact, photograph, poem etc. that portrays a theme or issue that is relevant to young people in a chosen context. Students must identify a positive 'intervention' that would support young people in relation to the theme/issue.

 

70% Weighting

Students will write a 2000-word essay in which they analyse and critique an approach to working with young people that enables learning and positive transformation. In discussing the approach, students will critically engage with literature from the course and from individual reading and desk research.

Course Aims

The aim of this course is to introduce students to theories and approaches related to the social, emotional, and educational development of young people. It also aims to critically examine the impact of relevant policies that guide and underpin work with young people in formal and informal contexts.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

 

1. Critically examine a range of theories relating to the social, emotional and educational development of young people 

2. Critically analyse the impact of relevant policy on the provision of education for young people in formal and non-formal contexts

3. Demonstrate an understanding of approaches and methods that enable the positive development of young people

4. Critically examine a range of factors that affect young people's lives

5. Develop critical thinking and dialogical skills.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
