This course examines a range of contemporary issues and hot topics in education, equipping participants to critically navigate enduring challenges such as sustainability, technological innovation, big data, and equity in diverse learning contexts.

A blend of synchronous and asynchronous online components.

The following courses are excluded for students who have completed Into Headship PGCert:

■ Fundamentals of Leadership, Management and Improvement

■ Leading Professional Collaboration

■ Tackling Wicked Issues in Education.

Assessment will consist of two components:

■ Oral group presentation where participants will deliver a presentation that critically explores a contemporary challenge in educational leadership and management (1500 words)-40% 

■ To support individualisation of grades, all students will also complete a 10% weighted individual reflection on the group work, allowing personal learning and contribution to be recognised separately from the group output.

■ In line with the University of Glasgow's Assessed Group Work Policy (https://www.gla.ac.uk/myglasgow/apg/policies/assessment/assessedgroupwork/ ), an individual alternative may be approved in exceptional circumstances  where a student is unable to participate in group work. In such cases, a 500-word reflective commentary aligned to the group task, will be used to assess the same learning outcomes.

■ Individual commentary report where participants will submit an individual report reflecting on the relevance of the presented issue to an appropriate educational context (2500 words). -60%

 This course aims to:

■ Critically engage participants with both emerging and enduring challenges in educational leadership and management. 

■ Deepen understanding of key societal issues impacting education, including:

■ Sustainable education

■ Children's rights

■ Technological innovation and generative AI

■ Big data and digital transformation

■ Inclusion, diversity, and equity in a post-truth world

■ Analyse the strategic role of educational leaders in framing and conceptualising complex problems and systemic issues.

■ Build on practical skills developed in previous courses to enhance participants' capacity for ethical, strategic, and responsive leadership.

By the end of this course participants will be able to: 

■ Demonstrate conceptual clarity around a chosen 'wicked issue' in education

■ Articulate actionable practice implications for addressing evolving challenges with reference to leadership praxis and organisational culture within their respective international contexts.

■ Work with others to lead a seminar discussion on a chosen topic.
