Short Description

This course will facilitate students to develop their knowledge and understanding of the anatomy and physiology of digestion in ruminants and monogastrics.

Timetable

10 week course. Approximately 1h lectures weekly, plus tutorial sessions and workbased learning.

Assessment

The summative assessment for this course will comprise of production of a poster in the style of a conference poster, including a brief oral presentation (50%), and a set exercise comprised of producing a Wiki (50%).

Course Aims

The course aims to provide a comprehensive account of the digestive anatomy and physiology of ruminants and monogastrics, according to life stage and physiological status.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

 

■ Compare and contrast the digestive anatomy of ruminant and monogastric animals;

■ Examine digestive physiology in ruminants and monogastrics;

■ Examine microbial degradation in ruminants and monogastrics;

■ Appraise and debate the current research literature on the gut microbiome;

■ Determine the anatomy and physiology of the digestive system in ruminants and monogastrics according to life stage and physiological status;

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
