Short Description

This course aims to develop and enhance the student's knowledge and understanding of the principles of effective management and leadership in the context of continuous improvement and the delivery of high-quality health and social care.

Assessment

An individual presentation (20%) incorporating critical reflection on the student's clinical or work-related practice

 

Written assignment (80%) in the form of a 2,500-word essay/report (excluding references), discussing an area of the student's clinical or work-related practice relevant to the course learning outcomes.

Course Aims

The course aims to enable students to understand and critically analyse leadership in contemporary health service delivery with a global perspective.

 

The course will also facilitate the development of skills that will enable students to effectively lead, facilitate and supervise others involved in caring for diverse groups of patients / clients within a constantly evolving health and social care environment.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to: 

1. Critically analyse the impact of policy and quality strategies related to health and social care in a global context

2. Demonstrate critical awareness of risk management in relation to health and social care provision

3. Critically explore and analyse strategies to facilitate negotiation and conflict management

4. Critically evaluate leadership, management and decision making approaches within a global health and social care context

5. Discuss and critically evaluate approaches to change management within the health and social care setting

6. Critically reflect on their own leadership and management skills in the context of their role

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
