The University of Glasgow Children’s Choir gave a shining performance in the University’s Memorial Chapel, as part of the National Schools Singing Programme with two other Scottish choirs on 28 May.

After months of rehearsals and planning, the Children’s Choir, St Joseph’s Primary School Choir from Aberdeen, and the joint choirs of St John’s and St Michael’s Primary Schools from Port Glasgow were conducted individually and as a massed choir, much to the delight of all present.

A highlight of the concert was Ula Weber’s I’m Gonna Shine. Ula’s piece was inspired by the community spirit after the 2017 Manchester Arena attack, featuring choirs and audience alike accompanying their singing with Makaton signs.

The University of Glasgow’s Children’s Choir is an initiative set to offer hundreds of state school pupils across the city access to high-quality music education, in collaboration with the National Schools Singing Programme (NSSP).

Launched in 2025, the Choir reflects the University’s deep commitment to its civic mission - supporting local communities, raising aspirations and improving access to higher education for young people from the most deprived backgrounds.

David Wynn-Evans is the director of the choir. Mr Wynn-Evans works directly with children in schools across the city, delivering professional-standard vocal tuition and building a choir of exceptional quality.

He said: "This event was a huge success, and a wonderful showcase of a year's work of our Schools Singing Programme. A great foundation for future years has been set. I’d like to thank the Choral Directors and school staff who made the day run smoothly, and the children who sang so beautifully. The future of singing in Scotland is bright!"

The Children’s Choir is part of a growing national movement supported by the National Schools Singing Programme and its patron, world-renowned composer Sir John Rutter CBE. The composer visited the University in 2024 to work with student teachers and young singers from across Scotland.

"I really enjoyed my visit to the University of Glasgow," said Sir John Rutter. "I am delighted that Glasgow schools are now joining the National Schools Singing Programme. This is a marvellous development, bringing the gift of music to more children - a gift they will carry with them for life."

The Children’s Choir is now on its summer break, but there are exciting plans in the works for next year, with rehearsals resuming in September.
