The first cohort of students on the University of Glasgow and Biocon partnership MSc successfully graduated from Biocon Academy on Friday 27 February, marking a significant milestone for the industry-integrated programme.

The MSc in Industrial Biotechnology (with industry training) was developed in close collaboration with Biocon Academy, while Biocon – India’s largest and a leading global biopharmaceutical company – provides the industrial training component. The programme equips students with a comprehensive understanding of the scientific principles of biotechnology, along with practical insights into industrial scale‑up and market delivery.

The ceremony took place at Biocon Academy in Bengaluru and marks completion of the industry training element of the MSc.

Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Chief Mentor of Biocon Academy and Chairperson of Biocon Group, said: “Congratulations to the inaugural cohort of the Biocon and University of Glasgow industrial immersion programme, on successfully completing their six-week industry training in India with Biocon Academy. This hands-on experience in biopharma technology reflects our shared commitment to blending academic excellence with real-world industry immersion to shape high-quality biotechnology professionals.”

Professor Rachel Sandison, Deputy Vice Chancellor (External Engagement) at the University of Glasgow, added: “Today marks an important milestone for our partnership with Biocon. By combining academic excellence with industry experience, we are equipping students with the scientific expertise, commercial insight and global perspective needed to succeed in the rapidly evolving biotechnology sector.”

The first class comprised of students from India and the United Kingdom who completed an intensive curriculum designed to bridge bioscience expertise with commercial insight. The hands-on placement with Biocon Academy is a hallmark of the programme, with students receiving advanced training in applied biosciences at Biocon Group companies, delivered by experienced industry professionals.

Student, Cressida Neola Menezes commented: “I have been fortunate to learn from truly excellent lecturers who were incredibly supportive throughout the programme. They were always deeply passionate about the subject and approachable to clarify any doubts. They ensured that we had a complete learning experience by organising industry visits, attending conferences, and including lectures from industry professionals.

“During training, our mentors not only made sure that we understood the modules thoroughly, but also shared valuable career insights that helped me gain direction for my future career. Beyond this, they always made us feel at home and were open to any feedback we shared, creating a truly supportive learning environment.

“I would highly encourage people to apply for this programme. You will have a wonderful year filled with memorable experience and valuable learning.”

Through sustained partnership, the University and Biocon have jointly driven progress in academic and research excellence, creating a strong link between higher education and the biopharmaceutical industry. Today’s milestone further strengthens that legacy and highlights the University’s continued focus on industry-relevant programmes and global collaboration.
