Professor Chris Chapman has been announced as the 17th CJ Koh Professor for Education, the most prestigious endowed visiting position at the National Institute of Education (NiE) in Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University.

The University of Glasgow is the first Scottish university to have been awarded this honour, and the fourth in the UK.

Professor Chapman, of the School of Education, joins an illustrious list of previous title holders, who have been based at the world’s most renowned universities, including Harvard, Cambridge and Stanford.

Professor Chris Chapman said: “I am honoured to be awarded the 2025 CJ Koh Professorship at NiE and am looking forward to working with my esteemed colleagues from Singapore and the previous holders of the CJ Koh professorship during my visit to Singapore. This is an excellent opportunity for Glasgow to extend our international partnerships with leading researchers and centres across the globe.”

Professor Sara Carter, Head of the College of Social Sciences, said: “The University of Glasgow School of Education is globally renowned for its research and teaching. I am delighted that Professor Chris Chapman has been honoured by the National Institute of Education at Nanyang Technological University in its 75th anniversary year. Professor Chapman’s visit, focusing on educational leadership, will help cement links between our two world-leading Schools of Education.”

Professor Chapman will visit the NiE in October, during its 75th anniversary year. During this time, he will deliver the CJ Koh Professor CJ Koh Public Lecture and NiE Seminar, and deliver the keynote speech at the inaugural Policy, Curriculum and Leadership Colloquium at the NiE on 10 October. He will also be involved in discussions with Ministry of Education officials, NiE departments, faculty, and other stakeholders, and undertake a strategic review of the NiE in 2026.

Every year, outstanding professors in the field of education are hosted by the National Institute of Education under the CJ Koh Professorship in Education programme. The CJ Koh Professorship has been made possible through a generous donation by the late Mr Ong Tiong Tat, executor of the late lawyer Mr Koh Choon Joo’s (CJ Koh) estate, to the Nanyang Technological University Endowment Fund.

Chris Chapman is Professor of Educational Policy and Practice at the University of Glasgow and was the Founding Director of the Robert Owen Centre for Educational Change (ROC), which is now known as the Centre for Transformative Change in Schools (CenTCS).
