The last of the University's summer graduation season takes place tomorrow, Thursday 11 July with the Engineering graduation ceremony at 11.00 a.m. in the Bute Hall.

At the ceremony, the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Engineering will be conferred upon Professor Ian Alexander Shanks and Lim Chee Onn.

A Glasgow graduate, Professor Shanks' work as Chief Scientist at Thorn EMI and at Unilever has seen him make significant contributions in the use and understanding of electro-optical effects in liquid crystals - a technology taken for granted in the daily use of laptops computers.

As Visiting Professor, he has come to the University regularly over the last 16 years and his industrial experience has enabled him to keep the Department of Electronics and Electrical Engineering fully briefed on developing trends in industry and research.

Lim Chee Onn is also a graduate of the University. He was a student here in the early 1960's and graduated with a First in Naval Architecture.

He has had a distinguished career within the Civil Service and served as a Member of Parliament in Singapore from 1977 to 1992. In addition, he has held a senior Executive role with the Keppel Corporation.

He has successfully combined his knowledge of engineering with an understanding of business, public administration and political processes to the benefit of his nation and the South East Asian region.

The Dean of the Faculty of Engineering will present two prizes:

Joanna Rosemary Shaw ヨ Glasgow Association of Women Graduates Centenary Year (First Prize) awarded by the Glasgow Association of Women Graduates to celebrate the centenary of the Association, founded in November 1901.

Geoffrey Malcolm Crow ヨ the Glasgow University Engineers' Society medal and Prize for 2001-2002. This award is made each year to a First Class Honours graduate of the Faculty of Engineering who, among other things, has demonstrated leadership and an interest in the broader aspects of engineering and society.
