We are delighted to announce Professor Jo Gill, Vice-Principal and Head of the College of Arts and Humanities, as the University’s new Gender Equality Champion.

The appointment forms part of the University's Equality Champion framework, through which members of the Senior Management Group provide leadership and advocacy across a range of equality priorities. Working alongside the University's Equality Groups and the Equality and Diversity Strategy Committee, Equality Champions help ensure that equality and inclusion are embedded within the University's governance, decision-making and strategic ambitions.

Professor Gill succeeds Professor Sara Carter in the role. Commenting on the appointment, Professor Andy Schofield, Principal and Vice-Chancellor and University Equality Champion, said:

"Gender equality is fundamental to our ambition to be a University where everyone can thrive, contribute and fulfil their potential. I am delighted that Jo has agreed to take on this important role and help lead our continued efforts to create an inclusive and supportive environment for all members of our community.

“I would also like to thank Sara for her contribution as Gender Equality Champion and for her commitment to this important area of work."

As Gender Equality Champion, Professor Gill will provide leadership and advocacy on gender equality issues across the University, working with colleagues and students to help ensure equality and inclusion remain central to the institution's culture, decision-making and future development.

Professor Jo Gill said:

"Universities have an important responsibility not only to advance knowledge but also to create communities in which opportunity and success are accessible to everyone. As Gender Equality Champion, I look forward to supporting and championing the work already underway across the University, listening to the experiences of our community, and helping to drive continued progress in gender equality."

The appointment reinforces the University's ongoing commitment to advancing equality, diversity and inclusion and to creating an environment in which all members of its community can thrive.
