Reflections on my Career Destinations internship

Hear from Eufa as they reflect on their time as a Careers, Employability and Opportunity intern, and the work they did to improve how you understand where your degree can take you!
During my internship, I worked alongside colleagues from Careers, Employability & Opportunity and the Web Team in External Relations, to help update the ‘Careers and future opportunities’ section of the undergraduate degree pages. The aim was to make it easier for current and prospective students to understand where their degree could take them after graduation, the skills they could develop and the career support available to them.
One of the main parts of my role was researching and organising information for the updated pages. This involved working with information on career pathways, job prospects and skill development, as well as considering how information could be best presented on the website. I also worked on the template, tested this with a number of pilot programme pages across the university and contributed to the alumni stories section.
The internship gave me experience of working with people from different teams across the University. I became more confident communicating professionally, particularly when writing emails and content. I also improved my ability to handle and organise data accurately, including using Excel and identifying inconsistencies in information.
One of the most rewarding parts of the internship was seeing the templates come together with all of the information I had worked on. It was particularly satisfying to know that the work would be used on the University website and could help current and future students make more informed decisions about their studies and careers.
The experience also helped me understand the type of working environment I enjoy. I liked the balance between working independently and collaborating with others. I particularly enjoyed contributing to work that could have a positive impact on the student experience.
Looking back, I think the internship has given me experiences that I can draw on in future applications and interviews. It has helped me recognise skills that I might not previously have thought about as much, such as handling data accurately, communicating with academic and professional staff and contributing to a project with a wider purpose.
I would definitely recommend making the most of opportunities like internships while at university. You gain practical experience outside of your degree, develop skills that can be difficult to build through academic work alone and get the chance to see how your work can contribute to something beyond your own studies.
