Invitation to attend Remembrance Service

Issued: Mon, 05 Nov 2018 15:04:00 GMT

All members of the University are invited to attend the Remembrance Service  on Sunday, 11 November, 2018, at 10.45am.

The University is taking part in a national initiative - "Guns fell silent” - with the Royal Artillery. Three guns will be placed at the South Front where a number of rounds will be fired in the run-up to the minute's silence at 11am.  Anyone wishing to attend the service is asked to make their way to the South Front by 10.35am. Please ensure that you dress appropriately as part of the service will take place outside.

Later that evening  a dedication ceremony will take place in the University Memorial Chapel as a number of names have been added to the plaques and the Victoria Cross stone for Harry Rankin has been placed in the floor of the Chapel. To mark this, a small act of remembrance will take place from 8pm in the Chapel -  781 candles at the altar and a prayer of reflection.  At 8.55pm, the  commemoration of the life of Captain Daniel Stewart of the Royal Army Medical Corps, who died on this day 100 years ago, will take place in the Chapel. This will be followed by a procession out to the Memorial Garden for a minute's silence.

Please note that there will be limited vehicle access during the Remembrance Sunday parades and practice and no parking at the South Front and Professors Square from 5pm on Friday 9 November to Sunday 11 November 9pm.

Light Up Red

The University's Bell Tower on the South Front will be lit up red on Saturday, 10 November, and Sunday, 11 November, to support Poppyscotland's campaign to mark the centenary of the end of World War 1.
