Four leading University of Glasgow Vice Principals have been named among the first set of panel members for the next Research Excellence Framework (REF).

Four leading University of Glasgow Vice Principals have been named among the first set of panel members for the next Research Excellence Framework (REF).

Professor Dame Anna Dominiczak, Vice Principal and Head of the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences, Professor Miles Padgett, Vice Principal for Research, and Professor Muffy Calder, Vice Principal and Head of the College of Science & Engineering are the top UofG academics appointed to the main panels for the REF 2021 exercise.

Professor Jon Cooper, Vice Principal Innovation and Knowledge Exchange, was appointed to Sub Panel 12, Engineering. A further 11 University academics have also been appointed to one of the 34 REF 2021 sub panels. More University of Glasgow researchers are expected to be appointed to the panels at a later date.

The REF is the UK’s system for assessing the excellence of research in higher education institutions. The REF was first carried out in 2014, replacing the previous Research Assessment Exercise. This first stage of panels includes a series of main panels and more specialised sub panels. The sub panels will help develop the main panel criteria over the course of 2018.

Panel members include leading researchers and individuals with expertise in the wider use and benefits of research, as well as members with an international perspective on the main panels. Each main and sub-panel also includes at least one member who will take up a new role introduced for REF 2021, overseeing and taking part in the assessment of interdisciplinary research.

The appointments were announced last week by the four UK higher education funding bodies, the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), the Scottish Funding Council, the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales and the Department for the Economy, Northern Ireland.

This follows a nominations process, when subject associations and other organisations with an interest in research were invited to nominate candidates. Over 4,000 nominations were made for roles across the four main panels and the 34 sub-panels.
