The School of Computing Science hosted the 2017 CERN Spring Campus at the beginning of April as the inaugural event in the School's celebration of 60 Years of Computing at Glasgow.

The campus ran over four intensive days in a program of scientific and technological dissemination and cultural exchange. The event brought together more than 20 experts from around CERN, staff from Glasgow and more than 80 students drawn from across Scotland.

The campus comprised:

  • 25 hours of seminars delivered by subject experts from CERN, Topics included grid and private cloud computing, security, team work, project management and science and society.
  • A Grid Wars hacking challenge in which all the students had the opportunity to participate, with University of Glasgow students David Frohlingsdorf and Duncan Adamson picking up the top prize.
  • Two social events hosted at the Hunterian Museum and the WEST Brewery. The events allowed CERN speakers, academic staff and students to spend time with each other and allow students to learn more about CERN and opportunities for engagement.

CERN Spring Campus organiser Derek Mathieson said: "CERN is proud to be part of the University of Glasgow's 60 years of computing celebration. The CERN Spring Campus is a special event that showcases the information technology at the heart of CERN's work. I have been very impressed by the great interactivity of the sessions this year with great questions from many students, a real testament to the high quality of computer science undergraduates here."

Tim Storer from the School of Computing Science said: "We were really pleased to be hosting CERN's Spring Campus. It was great to see so many students from across Scotland engage with the event and there was a real buzz in the air at the social events. I think students got a real boost from the event and we're actively exploring ways of building a stronger relationship with CERN in the future around computing and technology."
