Maintenance on Lion and Unicorn Staircase

Essential works will preserve unique piece of historical campus
One of the oldest parts of the University – the Lion and Unicorn Staircase – is undergoing refurbishment work this summer.
The work will complete essential maintenance to ensure the staircase, which dates from 1690 and was part of the University’s original campus in Glasgow’s High Street, is fit for the continued use of future generations.
The maintenance is part of a wider programme of work happening in Professor’s Square this summer, and will mean the staircase will be closed during July to allow for the repairs to be carried out.
The Lion and Unicorn staircase is a rare piece of the original University buildings which still survive to this day. It was moved stone by stone to its current location – at the heart of the campus – when the University relocated to Gilmorehill on 1870.
