Parking and travel restrictions - Glasgow 2018 European Championships cycle events

Glasgow City Council have informed us of a number of parking restrictions and road closures that will be in place between Friday 3 August and Sunday 12 August due to the European Championships 2018 cycling events.

Travel to and from the University’s Gilmorehill and Garscube campuses will be impacted, with the following restrictions in place:

 

Sunday 5 August – Women’s Road Race

The route includes Kelvin Way and University Avenue, returning by Gibson Street. Local parking restrictions will be in place from 16:00 Friday 3 August to 23:59 on Sunday 5 August.

On Sunday roads will close from 08:00, reopening in a phased manner from 17:00.

Wednesday 8 August – Women’s and Men’s Time Trials

Local parking restrictions will be in place from 16:00 on Monday 6 August until 23:59 on Wednesday 8 August.

The route means there is likely to be disruption on Wednesday 8 August, particularly to those travelling into the city from the north. Road closures will begin at 02:00 on Wednesday 8 August, reopening in a phased manner from 17:00.

Glasgow 2018 has advised that Byres Road will be closed with limited crossing points. Vehicular access to the University’s main building will be available via the Main Gate, Pearce Lodge and Dumbarton Road entrances from the south only. 

There is also likely to be no access to the Garscube campus from Maryhill Road on Wednesday 8 August, however access via Switchback Road will remain available.

First Bus have confirmed that 4/4A bus services will be affected as follows:

Services 4,4A towards Broomhill

Normal route to Bath St at Newton St, Left Newton St, Clydeside Expressway, Right at Thornwood Roundabout onto Dumbarton Rd, Left Crow Rd and normal route.

Services 4/4A towards Clarkston

Normal route to Crow Rd at Clarence Dr, Crow Road, Right at Dumbarton Rd, Left onto Expressway at Thornwood Roundabout, Expressway, Argyle St, Right Jamaica St, and normal route.

Therefore the No. 4 bus will not drop off or pick up outside the University, instead dropping off and picking up at Crown Road.

Sunday 12 August – Men’s Road Race

Local parking restrictions will be in place from 16:00 on Friday 10 August until 23:59 on Sunday 12 August. The route the same as the women’s Road Race, including Kelvin Way and University Avenue, returning by Gibson Street.

On Sunday roads will close from 06:00, reopening in a phased manner from 18:30.

 

Staff should consider the impact of this disruption on their normal travel and plan accordingly, using public transport where possible.

Please speak to your line manager if you need extra time to get to work or should you require alternative working arrangements.

For those staff responsible for liaising with suppliers/deliveries to campus can you please ensure that contractors are made aware of road closures and where possible schedule deliveries to take place before or after the events.
