New pedestrian route to Library and Fraser Building

There is a new pedestrian route leading from University Avenue up to the Hunterian Art Gallery and Library on the left and to the Fraser Building on the right.

A new pedestrian route has been created, leading from University Avenue up to the Hunterian Art Gallery and Library on the left and to the Fraser Building on the right.

Students and staff are asked to take particular care along this route which partitions the roadway into two sections – the left hand side for vehicles and the right hand side for pedestrians.  The pedestrian section will itself be divided into two lanes - one side for pedestrians going up the hill, the other for those going downhill.‌

The modification is for pedestrian safety and to facilitate construction traffic to the new Data Annex.

Out of hours, sections of the barrier at the top of the hill will be removable to create a bigger turning section for vehicles.

It is anticipated that the new traffic management system will be operational by early February when construction work is due to start on the Data Annex.

The Data Annex will be situated on a plot of land behind the Hunterian Art Gallery and University Gardens.

Due to be completed by September 2018, it will accommodate Scotgrid and the School of Physics and Astronomy in one data hall while a second hall will be used to house further IT systems.

The first phase of work was the clearance of Japanese Knotweed – an invasive species which requires specialists to eradicate it – which has now been completed.

Access to the lane behind University Gardens, via Hillhead Street, will be controlled by Graham Construction. Anyone who needs to enter University Gardens by the rear of their building will be offered an escort by Graham’s. Access for deliveries will also be handled by Graham’s.
