The GCG, founded in 1974, was one of the first curatorial specialist groups in the museum sector, and has around 300 members, in Britain and around the globe.

Hunterian medal winner John FaithfullThe award was made at the annual meeting, held in December 2013 in Canterbury. The citation by Dr Mike Howe, particularly emphasised Dr Faithfull's role in delivering and encouraging online access to geological collections, at Glasgow, and in working with bodies such as GCG and the British Geological Survey to emphasise the importance of open data for public and research users.

The Hunterian's rock and mineral collections are of international significance, and online access has given us a leading online presence among geological collections worldwide. The Brighton Medal (struck in silver) was inaugurated in 1992, and is named after Bertie Brighton, pioneering curator at the Sedgewick Museum, University of Cambridge. Dr Faithfull is the 10th recipient of this, the only medal awarded in the sector.
