Parking Hike

The cost of a University parking permit for the Gilmorehill campus is to increase by 5% this year with another 5% increase in 2015/16. The decision was taken following an Estates and Buildings annual review.  Last year the increase was 10%.

Estates and Buildings is currently reviewing parking arrangements in light of extensive infrastructure work due to start later this year linked to the Combined Heat and Power (CHP) district heating system, which urgently needs upgraded. It is expected that some existing parking spaces will have to be withdrawn while contractors are on site this year and next. You can find more on the project here:

www.gla.ac.uk/staff/news/podcasts/

At the moment there are 1,300 parking permit holders. The permits cost £200 per year.  There are 750 parking spaces available on the Gilmorehill Campus in total; about 400 of them in the immediate area of the Main Building. It is expected that more than 50 of the existing parking spaces will be lost to accommodate the CHP works. It is hoped that by the end of 2014, the number of permit holders and the parking spaces available will come back into balance. Staff handing back parking permits, who have paid in full at the start of the year, will be paid back the balance of the remaining part of the year. (Most staff opt for monthly deductions.)

As a result of the pressure on parking, and the CHP project, the parking permit scheme is currently closed to new members.

Twitter

Some Twitter users might have noticed a new tweeter on the block, writes Emma Gilmartin, Social Media Officer. The Communications Office has recently launched a new UofG twitter account called @GlasgowUniNews to add to our twitter family @GlasgowUni and our events account @GlasgowUniEvent.

The new account is primarily geared towards journalists and will allow the media to pick up our news stories quickly. Content will include our press releases, as well as things happening on campus that might not warrant a release. It will also allow us to alert the media when we have experts available for comment on topical issues. And we will also post links to stories that features UofG in the media, both at a domestic and international level. The will help us maintain our media contacts as well as foster new partners - particularly overseas. In turn this will also allow us to promote our work and successes on a recruitment and brand level too.
