Why not join the 300+ University colleagues who are now using our Yammer feed?

Yammer logoYammer has been around on Campus for well over a year. Yammer, now owned by Microsoft, describes itself as “a private social network that helps employees collaborate across departments, locations and business apps.”

Yammer can also be a good way to reduce email traffic and the Cc-ing and Bcc-ing that goes on.

The University feed now has 27 individual groups operating.  Some are based on departments...others cross the boundaries and cover topics of wider interest.

Internal Communications Manager, Phil Taylor, said: “Many organisations in the public and private sectors are embracing so-called enterprise social media. In some cases they are taking over from conventional “intranets”.

“Allowing unrestricted, organisation-wide conversations would have seemed horribly dangerous to many senior managers even relatively recently.  But now people recognise that these forums encourage silo-busting: they let colleagues from a wide variety of backgrounds discuss issues of common interest and even crowd-source solutions to common problems.

“I would encourage colleagues to try Yammer, if you are not already using it.  If you see a group that is 'private'...you can simply ask to join.  Incidentally I would appeal to those private groups to open their doors and lift the restrictions so everyone can see, join and support the conversation.

“The only ‘advisory’ is: use the forum responsibly.  Be courteous and be respectful of others.”
