The Campus Development Framework - the overall strategy for the redevelopment of the Gilmorehill Campus and Western Infirmary - has been approved by Glasgow City Council.

The University’s high-level plans for the recently acquired Western Infirmary site have been passed by Glasgow City Council, writes Claire Diamond.

The final draft of the University’s Campus Development Framework (CDF) was discussed by the council’s Executive Committee before being approved with no objections.

Calling the existing Gilmorehill campus a ‘jewel of the city’s Victorian heritage’, Ms Cameron went on to say that she felt ‘extremely privileged’ to have attended university here.

She outlined the University’s plans and summarised the council’s position on the Framework, stating: ‘The University of Glasgow has now acquired the adjacent site of the Western Infirmary, which will be vacated by the NHS in 2015, they’re looking to establish a future development vision for this third major evolutions of their campus.

‘The acquisition of the Western Infirmary grounds and buildings presents a significant opportunity to redefine the future of the campus, to provide modern facilities that befit its status as a world-leading research-intensive university that aspires to climb the global rankings, and of course is one of the Russell Group universities.

‘The green leafy upper plateau of the Gilmorehill tower area will be complemented by the new lower plateau on the former Western Infirmary site, with an urban quadrangle that will bring more activity to – thank goodness – the southern end of Byres Road.  This CDF for Gilmorehill intends to be part of a lasting legacy for students, academics and very importantly visitors, but most importantly of all – residents of the west end of Glasgow.’

The Development Framework will inform the estate strategy which goes to University Court in October.
