The European Academy of Sciences and Arts has elected the University of Glasgow’s Professor René de Borst as a member.

Professor de Borst, the University’s Regius Chair of Civil Engineering and Mechanics, will be welcomed to the Academy during a ceremony in March next year.

The Academy promotes interdisciplinary collaboration between scientists, philosophers and artists. More than 1500 members, including 29 Nobel laureates, have joined the Academy since its formation in 1990.

Professor de Borst’s research focuses on computational fracture mechanics. He is currently also working on new research to use computational models to better understand complex biological processes such as cell motility.

He joined the University of Glasgow in 2012 after a distinguished career in the Netherlands. There, he held senior positions at the Delft and Eindhoven Universities of Technology. He has also been a visiting professor at universities across three continents.

Professor de Borst said: “I’m honoured to be joining the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, which is one of the most selective and prestigious of its kind.

“I’m looking forward to supporting to the Academy and working more closely with its members in the coming years.”

Professor de Borst is already a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences and a fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. He is also the John Argyris Visiting Professor at the University of Stuttgart and the MTS Visiting Professor of Geomechanics at the University of Minnesota.
