Professor John Chapman has announced that he will be retiring from his role as Vice-Principal and Head of the College of Science and Engineering with effect from 31 July 2014. John joined the University in 1974 as a lecturer in Natural Philosophy, before going on to become head of the department of Physics, Dean of the Faculty of Physical Sciences and, in 2010,  Vice Principal and Head of the new College of Science and Engineering. Professor John Chapman

The Principal, Professor Anton Muscatelli, paid tribute to Professor Chapman: “John has made a tremendous and lasting contribution as the inaugural Head of College for Science and Engineering, and although I will miss his presence as a senior member of staff I would like to thank him for all that he has achieved on behalf of the University of Glasgow over 40 years of distinguished service.”

Professor Chapman has a large 'to-do' list before retiring next July. This includes revisiting some of the multidisciplinary themes with which the College has strong involvement; continuing to develop the College’s exciting TNE portfolio; growing international recruitment to the College's Schools, and research collaborations at our overseas hubs so that Glasgow has a real presence in these distinct geographical regions; and looking at ways in which Science and Engineering can make the most of the new opportunities that the Campus Vision project will offer.
But John won’t be cutting his ties completely after next July and hopes to continue to provide input to the University, especially in research and in developing our partnerships.
