Welcome Point gears up for busy time

With Freshers' Week and Open Days looming, the SRC-University Welcome Point on the ground floor of the John McIntyre building is a valuable asset for staff and students.

A reminder for staff and students that the University’s Welcome Point on the ground floor of the John McIntyre Building is a key source of information and help. With Freshers’ Week and Open Days looming, SRC staff are on hand throughout the day to offer support and to assist visitors. It also provides a high profile location to act as a rendezvous point for individuals and groups.

The Welcome Point area was recently refurbished with the opening of the new reception area on the ground floor. As well as a waiting area with information about the latest University news and events delivered via wall-mounted information screens and iPad stations, the renovated space also hosts a reception desk manned by students.  The SRC say moving the reception area has been a major benefit providing a highly visible location that is attractive to students and visitors arriving on campus. It is also a good example of partnership working between the University and the SRC. A large majority of the frontline staff are undergraduates and postgraduates. They have a wealth of knowledge, both about the campus and about the services on offer.

A lot of work has been done to make the new Welcome Point an attractive place to browse University information. A video wall is dedicated to four LCD screens displaying University and SRC events and announcements, while eight iPads offer another portal for accessing information. In addition,  University Archivist Lesley Richmond has developed a beautiful brass timeline that winds its way around the walls of the reception area, displaying important events across the University’s 561-year history.
