Royal Zoological Society for Scotland Centenary Lecture
Thursday 31 October 2013 in the McCall Lecture Theatre, Garscube Campus  (time 5:30pm)

On Thursday 31 October 2013 the School of Veterinary Medicine will host the Royal Zoological Society for Scotland Centenary Lecture in the McCall Lecture Theatre.  Edinburgh Zoo has been inspiring and exciting visitors for 100 years and we are delighted to mark this 100th anniversary in 2013 with this Centenary Lecture.

Iain Valentine and Douglas Richardson hold two of the top positions within the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland.  Each a dedicated conservationist and expert in their field, they will be asking – What does and should a 21st century zoo look like?  What place do zoos have in the world today? And what is the future of zoos and conservation.  Iain will discuss the Giant Panda Project at Edinburgh Zoo while Douglas will focus on the RZSS commitment to Scottish native species conservation.

Staff and students across the University are warmly invited to attend the lecture and an informal drinks reception in the Food Farm after the lecture.

Sir William Weipers Memorial Lecture
Friday 1 November 2013, Robertson Trust Lecture Theatre (time 5:30pm)

We are delighted that Professor Os Jarrett has agreed to deliver the Sir William Weipers Memorial Lecture, entitled ‘Curiosity saved the cat, and others: feline leukaemia virus in biomedical research’.

The Lecture will reflect on the talented staff Sir William Weipers recruited and the way they developed a paradigm for discovery and learning at the School, about how he was insistent that veterinary medicine was part of ‘whole medicine’, which placed an emphasis on comparative aspects of research on animal diseases, and will illustrate the discovery of feline leukaemia virus (at a time when the cat was very much the underdog, so to speak, in veterinary medicine) and the further international research that has essentially eradicated the infection in many areas and consequently improved cat welfare.  He will also describe the benefit of research on FeLV to man, as an impetus for the discovery of HTLV and HIV and the discovery of haem transporters and the role of mutations in their genes in the pathogenesis of congenital anaemias in children. The lecture will be a mixture of history and science – and staff and students across the University are warmly invited to attend.

Boyd Orr Building Major Lift Replacement Works Programme (October 2013 – Mid September 2014)

From Monday 21st October 2013 Estates and Buildings are starting a major lift replacement works programme, which will result in a reduced passenger lift service, being in operation in the Boyd Orr Building.

Student and Staff passenger lift services from this date will be provided by Lift No1 (far left hand lift, main lobby) and lift No4 (staff lift) located in the adjacent right hand side lift lobby.

The lift replacement work will undertaken in two phases: Phase 1 works will involve removing main lobby lifts No2 (centre lift) and lift No3 (far right hand lift) from service on the Monday 21st October 2013.  It is anticipated Phase 1 works will be complete Mid April 2014 at which point these two completely new lifts will then provide the buildings lift service.

In the second phase, main lobby Lift No1 (far left hand lift) will be removed from service immediately after the two new lifts are put into service with an anticipated completion date of Mid August 2014. Lift No 4 will be removed from service late April 2014 with an anticipated completion date of Mid September 2014. During this major lift replacement programme, we would like to thank all Students and Staff in advance for their patience and understanding for any inconvenience that may be caused due to these absolutely necessary lift works. We would politely request where possible, that stair use within the building is maximised, to keep passenger traffic on Lift No’s 1 and 4 to an acceptable level thus allowing a reasonable lift service to be provided.

For further information or if you have any related questions please contact Estates & Buildings on tel: 0141 330 6000 or email Robert.Kilpatrick@glasgow.ac.uk or Harry.Edwards@glasgow.ac.uk
