Appointments and awards for MVLS staff

Staff in the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences have been in the news with a series of new appointments and awards. They include Professor Phil Cotton, Professor Jill Morrison and Dr Carol Clugston, the College Secretary.

Professor Phil Cotton appointed to a ministerial task force to deliver a new higher education system for Rwanda.‌

Professor Cotton will be seconded from April 2013 as Principal of Medicine and Health Sciences to work on a range of organisational domains including academic structures and regulations, staffing and estates and buildings for the nation's universities. He will lead the team to set up and launch the new national university of medicine and health sciences. Sir David King who is currently Chancellor of Liverpool University will chair the task force. The other external members are a Canadian academic and a US academic.Phil Coton

The new university system begins on 1 September 2013. The University of Medicine and Health Sciences will graduate all health care professionals from optometrists to pharmacists, from dentists to doctors and from orthotists to nurses. Prof Cotton will live initially in Kigali where he will work with the ministries of education and health and also work to introduce training for clinical tutors in one of the largest national teaching hospitals, and ultimately will move to Butare (Huye) to establish the new University.Professor Cotton will be seconded from April 2013 as Principal of Medicine and Health Sciences to work on a range of organisational domains including academic structures and regulations, staffing and estates and buildings for the nation's universities. Honorary Doctorate for Professor Jill Morrison‌Jill Morrison

Professor Jill Morrison, Dean for Learning and Teaching, has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Orebro University in Sweden.The award was in recognition of work she completed to help the university gain approval from the Swedish Government to establish a new medical school. The first group of students began studying medicine in Orebro in 2010. Jill was presented with the award at a ceremony in the city's concert hall.

Leadership fellowship for Dr Carol Clugston‌Carol Clugson

MVLS College Secretary, Dr Carol Clugston, has been awarded a Fellowship of the Leadership Foundation. Fellows are the alumni of the Leadership Foundation's programmes who chose to undertake a fellowship in order to further develop their leadership knowledge and skills. This involves the participant in a personalised range of leadership development activities supported by the Leadership Foundation and their own institution. Carol is the University's first Fellow of the Leadership Foundation and will receive the award next month. Carol recently became a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute.
