Gilmorehill development gathers pace

The first drop-in consultation event was held at the Welcome Point at Gilmorehill on Wednesday 20 Feb and attracted students, staff and members of the public

Last month’s confirmation of the University’s acquisition of the Western Infirmary site attracted wide media coverage – all of it positive – and prompted interest in two open consultation events held hard on the heels of the announcement.

Campus visionThe University has secured most of the site bounded by Dumbarton Road, Church Street and University Avenue.  Talks are continuing with NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde to secure a remaining part of the site which would provide the entire 14 acres for University use.

The news was covered by both BBC Scotland and STV with Radio Clyde broadcasting an interview with Secretary of Court, David Newall.  There was print coverage in the Times, the Scotsman and the Herald and Evening Times and in several other newspapers.

The first drop-in consultation event was held at the Welcome Point at Gilmorehill on Wednesday 20 Feb and attracted students, staff members and some members of the public.  Staff from Estates and Buildings were on hand to answer questions, together with staff from the architects working on the development framework, Page and Park.  Visitors were able to browse exhibition displays explaining the background to the project and making clear the issues that will be considered as the campus development moves forward.  Information booklets had also been prepared complete with a detailed questionnaire.  A second event, aimed at the local community in the West End of Glasgow was held on Wednesday last week at Hillhead Library.

Director of Estates, Ann Allen, said: “Reaction from staff, students and people from the local community seemed almost entirely positive, in particular people have appreciated having a say at such an early stage in the process.  I think we were able to make clear that this is a very large project which will take many years to plan and deliver. It is about the entire University campus and not just about the segment containing the Western Infirmary. It was important for us to stress that all the stakeholders involved in this have the chance to offer views on how the plan develops.”  The Estates and Buildings Department are now working with the architects to process the feedback received in the questionnaires.  The deadline for responses is 8 March and the exhibition banners are still on show in the Welcome Point.

Consultation leaflets can be picked up from the Welcome Point, John McIntyre Building and responses can be emailed to estates-strategy@glasgow.ac.uk
