Around 150 students from the South American country have come to the city to study programmes mainly in science and engineering under a scholarship scheme established by the Brazilian Government. The University of Glasgow has enrolled around 35 students.

Lord Provost Liz Cameron welcomed the students to Glasgow at a reception in the Portrait Gallery of the City Chambers on Thursday 24 January, attended by staff from the University’s International Office and Prof David Fearn, International Dean for the Americas.

The Science Without Borders programme is an initiative of the Brazilian Government whose goal is to send some 70,000 Brazilian students abroad over a four-year period. The UK has been allocated 10,000 places, with the first students arriving in September 2012. The majority of the places are for undergraduate students studying in the UK for 1 year, with the remainder being for PhD students. The undergraduate scheme is administered by UUK, see http://sciencewithoutborders.international.ac.uk/, for details.
