The Principal, Professor Anton Muscatelli, has been made an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.

The accompanying citation said: "Anton has deployed his considerable talents in the service of his academic discipline, the University of Glasgow, the city, Higher Education, business and government and continues to do so with distinction.

"His contribution has been recognised on a national level with the award of Knight Commander (Commmendatore) Republic of Italy, 2008 and as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

"It is fitting therefore that the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow wishes to confer an Honorary Fellowship on Anton, for all that he has achieved, and continues to achieve, in so many ways, for so many."

Professor Muscatelli said: "I feel  very honoured to be awarded an honorary Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons  of Glasgow .  It’s a particular pleasure  given the long association the Royal College and the University have enjoyed.

"It’s an an association which has worked for over 400 years in support of  medical education and the development of the medical profession. I am delighted that this collaborative spirit continues to this day, through such initiatives as the Clinical Anatomy Skills Centre and research fellowships and that as an honorary fellow I can play my part in building this relationship  still further and for the ultimate good of health care at home and worldwide."

The Royal College was founded on 29 November 1599 with the grant of a charter from King James VI of Scotland to Peter Lowe, Surgeon, Robert Hamilton, Physician and William Spang, Apothecary. The charter empowered them, their heirs and successors to establish a body to examine all professing the art of surgery in Glasgow and South West Scotland. Uniquely for the time, the charter, as well as creating a body which surgeons could join, also allowed physicians to be members.

Today it is the only multidisciplinary College in the UK with a growing membership of over 10,000 physicians, surgeons, dental professionals, specialists in travel medicine and podiatric medicine.
