Professor Neil Metcalfe has been awarded a prestigious European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant of €2.25M to study 'The ecology of metabolic phenotypes'

Professor Neil Metcalfe from the Institute of Biodiversity, Animal Health & Comparative Medicine, has been awarded a prestigious European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant of €2.25M to study 'The ecology of metabolic phenotypes'.

These highly competitive awards are given to outstanding researchers, who are recognised as leaders in their field. They allow holders 'to pursue ground-breaking, high-risk projects that open new directions in their respective research fields or other domains'. Professor Metcalfe's five year project aims to understand how and why fundamental metabolic traits vary amongst individuals of the same species.

Speaking about the award, Professor Metcalfe said: “It will increase our understanding of a key biological trait, and help us predict the way in which organisms will respond to the challenge of environmental change.”

This is the second such award to be made to a researcher in the Institute, and is indicative of Glasgow's strength in the ecological and environmental field.
