Congratulations to Professor Neil Metcalfe and Professor Pat Monaghan who have been elected members of the Academia Europaea

Two academics from the University of Glasgow have been elected to one of Europe’s foremost research bodies, the Academia Europaea (Academy of Europe).

Professor Pat Monaghan and Professor Neil Metcalfe, who are both members of the University’s Institute for Biodiversity, Animal Health and Comparative Medicine, were elected on the strength of their international reputations in the field of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology.

The Academy aims to promote a wider appreciation of European research, encouraging interdisciplinary and international research in all areas, but particularly in relation to European issues. The Academy also exists to advise national governments and international agencies in scientific matters.

Invitation to the Academy of Europe is a rigorous peer-reviewed process with all candidates recognised as foremost academics in their field, including 38 Nobel Laureates, and reinforces the University of Glasgow’s international reputation in the Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences.

Pat Monaghan, Professor of Animal Ecology at the University, said: ‘Only six people across the whole of Europe were elected to the Organismic and Evolutionary Biology section of the Academy this year, so it is a real reflection of the strength of this discipline in Glasgow that two of them came from our University.’

Neil Metcalfe, Professor of Behavioural Ecology, said: ‘The European Academy seeks to encourage the highest possible standards in scholarship and research across all disciplines, so it is a real honour to be elected to its membership’.
